Suraj, Gujrat (India). A shocking news broke to Congressmen across the country when a Surat District Court has convicted and sentenced ex Congress President and Yuvraj of Congress Mr Rahul Gandhi to 2-year jail term in a 2019 criminal defamation case taking the surname “Modi”. The court has suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in higher court.
There is a meeting underway at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s house to deal with the situation. Senior Congress leadership and general secretaries are attending the meeting at Kharge’s house at Delhi. There is news from the sources; it has been decided by the Congress leadership that Rahul Gandhi having been convicted and sentenced to 2 years term in jail, he should not attend the Parliament proceedings in ongoing session. Technically, Rahul Gandhi being a Member of Parliament can not attend the Parliament until High Court or the Supreme Court suspend the sentence. There is question that having been convicted, Rahul Gandhi disqualified as an MP. If so, is the case, the Election Commission may announce by election in Wayanad (Kerala).
Delhi Chief Minister, Mr Arvind Kejriwal supported Congress MP Rahul Gandhi after Surat Court held him guilty in the 2019 “Modi surname” defamation case and stated that “We have differences with the Congress, but it is not right to implicated Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case like this. The job of the public and the opposition to ask questions. We respect the court but disagree with the decision”.
The defamation case dates back to before the 2019 national election, when Rahul Gandhi was campaigning in Karnataka and said ‘all thieves have Modi as the common surname’; the remark was in reference to fugitive businessmen like Nirav Modi. After conviction Rahul Gandhi quoted Mahatma Gandhi “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it”.
Priyanka Gandhi also tweeted “Whole machinery of scared power is trying to suppress the voice of Rahul Gandhiji by imposing price, punishment, discrimination. My brother has never been afraid…. Have lived speaking the truth, will continue to speak the truth”. She further stated, “He will continue to raise the voice of people of the country. The power of truth and the love of crores of countrymen are with him”. The country may expect “Dharna Pradarshan” by the various Congress organization across the states.
