Starting today, food products that are packaged and labelled and weigh up to 25 kg will be subject to a 5% GST (goods and services tax). Unbranded foods include cereals, legumes, curd, “lassi,” and puffed rice will now be subject to taxation under the new tax laws. Only branded goods were formerly subject to the charge. Simply explained, earlier, when branded and packaged, products like pulses, cereals like rice and wheat, and flour drew a 5% GST. Food items will now fall under the “pre-packaged and labelled” category and be subject to GST.
However, packaged food goods weighing up to 25 kg/25 litres will be subject to GST. There will be no GST on items weighing more than 25 kg/25 l. Pre-packaged and labelled food goods will be subject to a 5 percent GST beginning July 18.
Aside from that, the GST rate on paper spoons, forks, knives, ladles, skimmers, and cake servers increased from 12 to 18 percent.
GST was increased from 12% to 18% for power-driven pumps, including centrifugal pumps, deep tube-well turbine pumps, submersible pumps, and bicycle pumps. The GST rate on LED lamps, lighting, fixtures, and their metal printed circuit boards would likewise increase from 12 to 18 percent. The GST rate for solar water heaters raised from 5% to12%.
